Certification of Products in Togo: The WAQSP supports the setting up of the National Service in charge

The West Africa Quality System Programme (WAQSP), financed by the EU and implemented by UNIDO, is definitely committed to the setting up of a Regional Quality Infrastructure through initiatives’ support of creation or strengthening of competent bodies and services at national level. Then, it recently supports the setting up of Togo's National Product Certification Service (NPCS). Mr. Chérif EZZINE, international expert recruited by the program, carried out, for this purpose, a capacity building mission to train members of the steering committee and the impartiality preservation committee (IPC) on the issues of certification. It was from 27 to 28 May 2019, at SAZOF headquarters in Lome (Togo).

During these two days, the work mainly focused on, among other things, the presentation of product certification, its issues and benefits, the reminder of the work and achievements of the 1st mission (February 28 and March 1, 2019), the presentation of the certification process, review and validation of the document system. The participants (including seven (07) women), representatives of about twenty structures, were educated about their roles and tasks as members of the IPC to successfully implement the NPCS and its functioning, even if it is necessary to make use of additional financing to those provided by the WAQSP.

In his speech, François F. KPAKPO, National Focal Point of WAQSP, said that the setting up of this service in Togo is a political as well as social demand. Mr. Chérif EZZINE, international expert in Product Certification, recalled the work and achievements of his first mission, including the diagnosis of the national certification structure, raising awareness of the ISO 17065 standard, the establishment of the steering committee as well as the required documents by the functioning of the NPCS drawn up by him and transmitted to the steering committee for examination and validation during the second mission. He also presented the content of the work planned for this second mission, mainly: the review of the current version of the draft quality manual; review of current versions of draft documents related to the certification program; review of current versions of draft documents related to the operational control of certification; review of current versions of draft documents related to general and structural requirements; review of current versions of draft documents related to quality management, etc.

At the end of this second mission, Togo can look forward to now having competent resource persons for its impartiality preservation committee (IPC). This is an important step towards the establishment of the National Product Certification Service (NPCS).
