ECOQMARK: The process of registration of the ECOWAS regional mark of conformity takes its right and proper course.

UNIDO continued its activities as part of the upcoming launch of the Regional Mark for Compliance with ECOWAS Standards (ECOQMARK). The Project team within WACQIP has already finished preparing the documentsfor  registrating the quality Mark  in order to submit it to the ECOWAS Commission for validation.The ECOWAS Commission will then have to authorize its submission to the responsible authorized bodies. The work carried out focused on:

• Collection of information relating to registration processes, costs and documents to be provided to the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization.

• The search for legal firms specializing in intellectual property law in 12 countries (South Africa, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo)

• The submission of the file to the ECOWAS Commissioner in charge of Industry and the Promotion of the Private Sector, Mr. Mamadou TRAORE, for its pre-validation;

• Presentation of the registration documents to the Director of Legal Affairs of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Daniel B. LAGO. Following his recommendations, a contact was established for this purpose with the OAPI Côte d'Ivoire branch.

Remember that this mark of conformity to ECOWAS standards (ECOQMARK) has been developed and already proposed to be affixed to certain products (drinking water, cashew nuts, vegetable oils, fish and cement). It is therefore ready to be applied to regional value chains. It could be applied to protective masks as part of the prevention of Covid 19 infection.
