EMS / Gambia: The WAQSP built capacity of 27 national experts on the requirements of ISO 14001 v 2015

As part of the implementation of the West Africa Quality System Programme (WAQSP), 27 national experts from the Republic of Gambia were trained, from September 3 to 5, 2018, on the requirements of the ISO 14001 v 2015 standard. The work took place in the NAQAA Conference Room (Bertil Harding Highway, The Gambia), and aims to build the capacity of these national human resources for better ownership of the requirements of the Environmental Management System (EMS).

During the three days of training, participants under the direction of the trainer have been equipped with now a more refined knowledge of the concepts and requirements relating to the ISO 14001 v 2015. They can therefore interact with the Environmental Management System and contribute more effectively to development.

At the closing ceremony, Mr. Papa Secka, the Director General of the Gambia Bureau of Standards, expressed his deep gratitude to the European Union for funding this national training workshop as part of the West Africa Quality System Programme (WAQSP) implemented by UNIDO. He explained how this could help the tourism industry and all its stakeholders to effectively manage their environment. He encouraged all participants to apply the knowledge they gained during the training and reassured them of his will and that of its institution, to help them build their capacity to implement the standards related to the Environmental Management System.

At the end of the training, certificates were given to the participants.
