Benin reverses at the national level the knowledge acquired during the regional training on the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection: Twenty-five (25) representatives of Beninese associations and national consumer protection structures concer

The National Technical Coordination of the West Africa Quality System Programme (WAQSP) organized, from 9 to 10 October 2018, at the conference room of the Directorate General of Industrial Development (DGDI), a training workshop on the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection. Twenty-five (25) in total, participants from nine (09) consumer protection and quality promotion associations in Benin as well as national structures in charge of consumer protection, appropriated the content of the Practical Guide. They committed themselves to internalize it at the level of their respective structures in order to improve and effectively carry out their actions of defense and consumer protection in the field.

At the opening, Mr. Youssouf Mama Sika, National Technical Coordinator of the WAQSP, recalled the objective of the training that is to build capacity of consumer associations and other structures of defense and consumer protection from the recommendations of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection. He also reminded participants of the objectives of the WAQSP and said that it is a Programme developed for the benefit of all ECOWAS Member States and Mauritania, financed by the European Union and implemented by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

At the beginning of the training, the Director General of Commerce, Mr. Jean Bernard Fayi, one of the two trainers, introduced to the participants the content of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection. According to him, the purpose of the Guidelines is plural. It aims, inter alia, to help countries to ensure or maintain adequate protection of their citizens as consumers; to facilitate the construction of consumer protection associations; to promote international cooperation in the field of consumer protection for the sharing of experiences in the field of protection; and then to facilitate production and distribution methods adapted to the needs and wishes of consumers. He also said that the consumer's safety requires the adoption of regulations by the State, the setting up of control teams, the awareness of economic operators on the interest of protection consumers and especially the watch at the level of the consumer, himself. "The consumer must watch over his safety without waiting for the State," he advised participants.

On the second day of the training, the second trainer, Mr. Ernest Gbaguidi, President of the Benin Health and Consumer Survival Association, trained participants on the recommendations of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection.

At the end of the workshop, certificates were given to participants.
