Interview with Mr. Henry P. Wolokollie, President of the Liberia Consumer Protection Association

"This ECOWAS regulatory framework will strengthen us and give us the means by which we can protect consumers in Liberia"

Through its President, Mr. Henry P. Wolokollie, the Liberia Consumer Protection Association, participated actively in the regional workshop for the validation of an ECOWAS community regulatory framework for consumer protection, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 19 to 21 November 2018. In this interview, he reviews the difficulties faced by consumers in Liberia and the real impact of the ECOWAS regulatory framework, once adopted, on the fight and protection of consumers in his country.

WAQSP: What are the difficulties faced by consumers on the ground in Liberia?

Mr. Henry P. Wolokollie: In Liberia, consumers are faced with poor quality goods and services, as it’s the case in many parts of the region.

WAQSP: How do you appreciate this ECOWAS initiative to put in place a regulatory framework for consumer protection?

Mr. Henry P. Wolokollie: We appreciate what ECOWAS does. As you know, this meeting in Ouagadougou follows another regional meeting held in Lomé (Togo) in April 2018 that aimed at strengthening the knowledge of consumer associations in West Africa on the Practical Guide for United Nations Consumer Protection, which strengthens our advocacy work for consumer protection. So, the Ouagadougou meeting will really help us to be better equipped to more adequately defend the consumer cause in Liberia, and we are really grateful for what ECOWAS is doing.

WAQSP: How can this ECOWAS regulatory framework, once adopted, really have a positive impact on your work of consumer protection in Liberia?

Mr. Henry P. Wolokollie: This is a process we have already started and the Ouagadougou meeting will help us to better advocate for the enactment of our national consumer protection act. We have the arguments to better convince our Minister, our Parliament, so that we can start using the law on consumer protection; a law that will tell our consumers ways and means to complain. This workshop and this ECOWAS regulatory framework will strengthen us and give us the means by which we can protect consumers in Liberia.
